This Holiday Season Revisit a True Classic, the FILA 95.
Widely regarded as one of the best debut signature models of all time, the FILA 95 captured a moment in time. During this time Hip-Hop was booming as a culture and the NBA was in search of its heir apparent. Enter the 95, a shoe that sold over a million pairs in its first week. The athlete who donned them himself won rookie of the year and FILA cemented its brand relevance on the hardwood. Off the court, though, the silhouette was embraced by many including an appearance in Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s smash hit, “You’re All I Need.”
The FILA 95’s design was just as refreshing as seeing the brand on a court. The silhouette debuted a distinctive lace system with webbed gillies running the length of the shoe’s eye row and around the ankle. This allowed for a custom fit and a unique look, two important variables that make 90’s footwear memorable. The silhouette’s large 95 logo detail is recessed and embedded on the outer midsole is probably the most recognizable detail of the shoe. The midsole’s structure was built to elevate the threat of a player rolling their foot. The pair which carries a combination of full grain leather and FILAbuck with an extended toe cap and back counter. The upper sits atop an EVA midsole and rugged rubber outsole. The latter feature was a unique dual row herringbone tread that translated well on the rough blacktop just as much as the court.
FILA saw tremendous success in 2016 with Foot Locker. FILA returned to shelves with models like the Original Fitness, F-13, Cage and MB which all saw tremendous sell-through. Following the success of those retail aspects and a Ghostbuster collaboration, Foot Locker approached FILA to be a part of its storied “Week of Greatness” release schedule. The 95 releases today in Men’s and Kids sizes.
